Answer:

Let AB be the tower . Let C and D be two points at distances a and b respectively from the base of the tower. Then, AC = a and AD = b. Let angle ACB = 90° - theta. Let h be the height of the tower AB.

In triangle CAB,

tan theta = AB/AC

=> tan theta = h/a....... (i)

In triangle DAB,

tan (90° - theta ) = AB/AD

=> cot theta = h/b........ (ii)

From (i) and (ii),

(tan theta)(cot theta) = h^2/ab

=> 1 = h^2/ab

=> h^2 = ab

=> h = root ab metres.

Hence the height of the tower is root ab metres.
