according to the question the breadth of the walking region = X

as you can see there are four rectangles formed by the walking area

the length of two walking zones is equal to the length of the rectangle which is 16 centimetres

in the breadth of the rectangle there are two opposite of zones whose length is 10 - 2X where X is the breadth of the rectangular area

total area walking zones is equals to 120cm^2

area of 2 bigger rectangles forming length of the field = 2 × 16 × X

=32 X...................... eq 1

area of two smaller rectangles are

2×(10-2X)× X.........................eq 2

adding eq1 and eq2

we get

eq1 + eq2 = 120

32X+2×(10-2X)× X= 120

WE GET

4X^2 - 52X +120 =0

after solving this we get

X= 10,3

X = 10 is not possible because the breadth of the whole field is 10

therefore the breadth of the walking area is 3 metres
