ANSWER:

Given:

  • Ratio of monthly incomes of Amit and Atul = 6:5
  • Ratio of monthly expenditure of Amit and Atul = 5:4
  • Saving of both of them = Rs 2500/month

To Find:

  • Their monthly incomes

Solution:

Let the monthly incomes of Amit and Atul be 6x and 5x respectively and let their monthly expenditures be 5y and 4y respectively.

We know that,

Savings = Income - Expenditure

So,

⇒ Savings of Amit = Amit's income - Amit's expenditure

⇒ 2500 = 6x - 5y

⇒ 6x - 5y = 2500 --------(1)

And,

⇒ Savings of Atul = Atul's income - Atul's expenditure

⇒ 2500 = 5x - 4y

⇒ 5x - 4y = 2500 --------(2)

Now, multiplying (1) by 4 and (2) by 5, so that variable y can be eliminated.

Hence,

⇒ (6x - 5y = 2500) × 4

⇒ 4×6x - 4×5y = 4×2500

⇒ 24x - 20y = 10000 --------(3)

And,

⇒ (5x - 4y = 2500) × 5

⇒ 5×5x - 5×4y = 5×2500

⇒ 25x - 20y = 12500 --------(4)

Subtracting (3) from (4),

⇒ (25x - 20y) - (24x - 20y) = 12500 - 10000

⇒ 25x - 20y - 24x + 20y = 2500

⇒ 25x - 24x - 20y + 20y = 2500

⇒ x = 2500

So,

  • Amit's monthly income = 6x = 6×2500 = 15000
  • Atul's monthly income = 5x = 5×2500 = 12500

Hence, the monthly incomes of Amit and Atul are Rs 15000 and Rs 12500 respectively.

Formula Used:

  • Savings = Income - Expenditure
