in ∆ABE , AE =13cm & BE=5cm. using Pythagoras theorem , AB=12cm. now in ∆DBC, CD^2 = BD^2 +BC^2. 13^2 = (AB-AD) + (BE+CE)^2. 169= (12-x)^2 + (5+x)^2. 169 = 144-24x+x^2 +25+10x+x^2. 169 = 169 + 2x^2-14x. 2x^2 = 14x. 2x=14. x = 7cm.
