Answer:

9 & 2

Step-by-step explanation:

Ques:

   One number is 7 more than the other.  Its square is 77 more than the square of the smaller no. find the numbers?

Soln:

Let x be the greater number and y be the smaller number.

=> x = y+7  ----- (1)               &

    x² = y²+77  ------- (2)       (given)

squaring (1) =>

          x² = (y+7)²

=> y²+77 = (y+7)²    ----------------    from (2)

=> y²+77 = y²+2(y)(7)+7²

=> y²+77-y² = 14y+49

=> 14y = 77-49 = 28

=> y = 28/14 = 2

substitute the value of y in (1), we get

x = 2+7 = 9

____________________________________

verify: x² = (y+7)² having x=9 and y=2

=> 9² = (2+7)²

=> 9² = 9²

verified
