Correct Question:

A wooden block floats in water with two-third of its volume submerged find

  • density of wood
  • when the same block is placed in oil and three-quarters of its volume is immersed in oil calculate the density of oil.

Solution :

\sf{(1)}

Given data,

  • Volume of the wooden block = V
  • Volume of the submerged part = Volume of water displaced = 2V/3
  • Density of water (ρ) = 1g cm⁻³

⇒ Weight  = buoyancy

⇒ Volume of the wood x density of wood = Volume of the water displaced

                                                                                      x  density of water

⇒ V x ρ = 2V/3 x ρ'

⇒ ρ = 2/3 x 1

⇒ ρ = 2/3

The density of wood is 2/3 gm cm⁻³.

_______________________

\sf{(2)}

Given data,

  • Volume of the wooden block = V
  • Volume of the submerged part = Volume of water displaced = 3V/4
  • Density of wood (ρ') = 2/3 g cm⁻³

⇒ Weight  = buoyancy

⇒ Volume of the wood x density of wood = Volume of the oil displaced

                                                                                      x  density of oil

⇒ V x ρ' = 3V/4 x ρ"

⇒ ρ"  = 2 x 4 / 3 x 3

⇒ ρ" = 8/9

The density of wood is 8/9 gm cm⁻³.
