In this chapter the author has been sent to a new high school which his best friends are not attending. They are sent to a different high school. The author feels very lonely in this new school. one day when he was sitting near the fireplace doing his homework, he saw that smoke was coming out of the gaps in the roof of the house.
the author and his mother went out to see what was happening and saw that the whole roof was on fire. Author's mother went inside the house to get the important documents. after that she ran into the house in the same crazed state to get the photos of the author's father. the firemen arrived and started fighting the fire. His mother was unconscious because she had inhaled some smoke. After the fire, the author realised that his cat was nowhere to be seen he was filled with dread and wanted to curl up and die.
the next day he felt awkward at school since he had been wearing the same cloths from last day, he also did not have any bag. by then his classmates surprised him with a new bags, cloths, shoes etc. this moved him a lot and helped him to realise all the good people around him.
he and his friend were looking at his new house being built when a women came and gave him back his cat. he was very happy thereafter and realised how his life was building itself up.
