lemme guess. the story's about a guy who is either deaf and unable to speak or unable to speak right? . If so, the person in the story wants to express his joy in telling that he finally achieved speaking. syllables determine how you break speech into parts. eg: carnage = car + nage. so it's 2 syllables. the person says that he was not able to say whatever he was saying properly due to him being introduced to syllables just then. he says that earlier he was like a prisoner who was not able to get out of a jail. here jail means his own body. he was not able to speak and the sound wouldn't go out of his body properly. freedom here means that he was finally able to speak. he was no more forced to be quiet

Hey There!
This is perhaps the story involving Helen Keller and Sarah Fuller.
Miss Fuller was an educationist, an expert in teaching specially abled people, and it was she who gave the first speech lessons to Hellen Keller.
For your paragraph, let us first understand the meaning of syllables.
A syllable is an individual unit of pronunciation of sound.
For example, earnestly is made up of three sounds : "ear - nest - ly". So it is a three syllable word.
Water is made up of two syllables: "wa- ter"
Coming to your highlighted paragraph.
The narrator (perhaps Hellen Keller) had been learning how to pronounce different letters with the help of Miss Fuller.
Her first spoken sentence was "It is warm" . Since she was speaking a sentence for the first time, her pronunciation was not accurate. She was stammering while speaking. [Stammering means to speak with sudden pauses, and also sometimes repeat some initial sounds of words]
But in all, the narrator was extremely happy, as she was doing soemthing as beautiful as human speech for the first time in her life.
She became aware that she indeed had the ability to say words and sentences [ My soul [became] conscious of the new strength ] . She felt like coming out of a prison of silence. She had been trapped there, without being able to speak anything. But now she was free [...came out of bondage]
Now, she knew she would be finally able to communicate with others, and share knowledge, speak words of faith and all. She stammered, for sure. But she was not going to let her stammered speech to become an obstacle.
"...broken symbols of speech..." refer to the broken syllables she was pronouncing.
