Let the swimming pool total capacity be 100 barrels,

Let discharge from pipe 1 per hour be X barrel/hour

Similarly from second pipe be Y barrel/hour

Now 12X + 12Y=100

And 4X + 9Y=50

solving we get X=5, Y=10/3

Time taken = total volume/ (discharge rate or velocity)

Hence from pipe 1 it is 100/X= 20 hours

And for pipe 2 it is 100/(10/3)=300/10=30 Hours

20, 30 Hours

Hope it helps.

Thanks for A2A

suppose pip can fill in a and second can fill in b hours ,

as basic says , if pipe is taking a hours , its 1 hours effort will be 1/a , 12 h effort =12/a so

12/a + 12/ b = 1 , 4/a + 9/b =1/2 ..(2) ,

4/a + 4/b = 4/12 = 1/3 ..(1)

from equation 1 and 2 , 5/b = 1/6 , b = 30 h , 12/a = 1- 12/30 = 18/30 , a= 30*12/18 =20h

so ans is 20h and 30 h

Raising my hand

Teacher, can you clear up my questions about this problem?

“It can take 12 hours to fill a swimming pool using two pipes (if 1 pipe is used for 4 hours and other 9 hours), and only half of the pool can be filled, how long would it take for each pipe to fill the pool separately”
