30ml of a mixture of oxygen and ozone was heated till ozone was completely decomposed. The mixture on cooling was found to expand 40ml. Find the volume of oxygen in original mixture.

Let

Volume of ozone be x ml

And volume of oxygen be 30-x ml

And all ozone is converted to o2

And that is 1/2 volume of o3 is formed

And o3 requires some o2 for conversion

O3+1/2o2=2o2

And o2 reacted is twice o3 decomposed

Volume reacted = 2 volume o3 decomposed

Volume reacted = 2x

Volume unreacted = 30-3x

By volume cooling contraction law

-40=x/2+30-3x-30

-40=-5/2x

x=16ml

Volume of o2 = 4ml

Volume of o3 = 16ml
