HELLO THERE!

This compound has two functional groups : Ketone and Alcohol.

For Ketone,

Prefix Name: Oxo / Keto

Suffix Name: one

For Alcohol,

Prefix Name: Hydroxy

Suffix Name: ol

Now, according to the IUPAC rule, the for the group having less priority, we use the Prefix name and for the group having more priority, we use the Suffix name.

From the list of priority order, we get Ketone to be more prior than Alcohol (as Ketone comes above Alcohol in the list). So, we will use Prefix for alcohol (OH group, which is hydroxy), and Suffix for Ketone (=O group, which is one).

Now, since, Ketone is more prior, we shall number the carbons in such a way that Ketone group gets the lowest number. So, we start numbering from the left side.

The longest chain has 5 Carbons. The (C=O) is the second carbon, and the OH group is attached to the 4th Carbon. A methyl group is also attached to the 4th Carbon.

From the above data, we get the IUPAC name of the compound as:

4-hydroxy-4-methyl Pentan-2-one.

or, 4-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pentanone

[Hydroxy is written before Methyl because according to the alphanbetical order, H comes before M].

THANKS!
