1st group - Clergy
2nd group - Nobility

Although the upper 2 classes were made up only a small section of the total population, yet they were the people who controlled all the political and economic system of the nation. They enjoyed all the privileges and rights. The people belonging to the 3rd estate didn't enjoy any political right.
III) The rise of middle class:
The spread of industrial revolution led to the rise of middle class. It was the class of businessman, traders, bankers and manufacturers etc. The middle class people became the leaders of the revolution.
IV) Influence of the philosophers and writers:
There were many French philosophers and thinkers like Montesquieu, Rousseau and Mirabeau who infused people with the idea of liberty, fraternity and equality.
V) Wild gap between the rich and the poor:
The population of France rose which led to a rapid increase in the demand for food grains. Production of grains didn't keep pace with the demand. So the price of the bread rose rapidly. Wages of the labours didn't keep pace with the riding price, so the gap between the rich and the poor widen
