✤ Required Answer ✤
Q) Write the rules for images through spherical mirrors and draw the ray diagrams.
Ans ⟹ The rules for images through spherical mirrors are:
- A ray of light which is parallel to the principal axis of a spherical mirror will pass through its focus after reflection from the mirror.
- A ray of light passing through the centre of curvature of a spherical mirror will reflect back along the same path.
- A ray of light passing through the focus of a spherical mirror becomes parallel to the principal axis after reflection.
- A ray of light which is incident at the pole of a spherical mirror is reflected back making the same angle with the principal axis.
[ Refer to the attachment for the required diagrams. ]
Q) Draw concave mirror and mark Pole, Focus and Centre of curvature.
Ans ⟹ Refer to the last diagram in the attachment.
Let's know their definition too:
- Pole : The geometrical central point or a reflecting spherical surface is called pole. Denoted by 'P'.
- Focus : The point on the principal axis, where all parallel lines meet after reflection is called focus. Denoted by 'F'.
- Centre of Curvature : The reflecting surface of a spherical mirror form a part of a sphere. It has centre which is known as centre of curvature. It is denoted by 'C'.

✤ More Information ✤
What is a spherical mirror?
⟹ A spherical mirror is that mirror which is spherical in shape or we can say that mirrors whose reflecting surface are curved inward or outward spherically is called a spherical mirror.
Types of spherical mirrors:
⟹ Concave mirror : If any spherical mirror is curved inward then it is called concave mirror.
- Concave mirrors are used by dentists to see the large image of teeth.
- Concave mirrors are used as shaving mirrors.
Convex mirror : If any spherical mirror is curved outward then it is called convex mirror.
- Convex mirrors are used as rear view mirrors.
- Convex mirrors are also used in shops for security.
