Distance is equal to the displacement when an object travels along the straight path in one direction only.

No, it's not necessary because speed is a scalar quantity that is, it doesn't depend on direction.

Yes, it is necessary because velocity is a vector quantity therefore, direction will affect velocity.
Moreover there can be only two paths- straight or curved. And in a curved path the director motion at a point is the tangent to that point therefore, at every point direction changes.
