Answer:

Let p ( x ) = x^3 + ax^2 - 2x + a + 6

suppose x + a is a factor of p ( x )

By factor theorem , p ( - a ) = 0

=> (-a)^3 + a × (-a)^2 - 2 × (-a ) + a + 6 =0

=> -a^3 + a^3 + 2a + a + 6 =0

=> 3a + 6 = 0

=> 3a = - 6

=> a = -2

Thus a = -2
