Required Answer:

✒ GiveN:

  • Point A is at (10,-2)
  • Point B is at (1,-11)
  • Point P is at (3,y)
  • And, PA = PB

✒ To FinD:

  • Value of y.........?

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

How to solve?

As per the question, The point P is at equidistant from point A and B. Or we can say that the distance between PA and PB are equal. So, here we can use the distance formula which says that,

  • The distance between two points A(x1, y1) and B(x2,y2) is given by,

 \large{ \boxed{ \rm{AB =  \sqrt{(x2 - x1) {}^{2}  + (y2 - y1) {}^{2} } }}}

⚘ Or distance between any points is the square root of squared difference of abscissae and squared difference of ordinates.

Solution:

We have,

  • A at (10,-2)
  • B at (1,-11)
  • P at (3,y)
  • PA = PB

By using distance formula,

➝ PA = PB

➝ √(10 - 3)² + (-2-(y))² = √(3-1)² + (y+11)²

Squaring both sides,

➝ 7² + (2+y)² = 2² + (y+11)²

➝ 49 - 4 = (y+11)² - (2+y)²

➝ 45 = y²+ 22y+ 121 - (4+ y²+ 4y)

➝ 45 = y²+ 22y+ 121 - 4- y²- 4y

➝ 45 = 18y + 117

➝ -72 = 18y

Flipping it,

➝ 18y = -72

➝ y = -72/18 = -4

So, The correct answer is:

  • y = -4 (Option B)
