2x + y = 3.................(i)×3

x + 3y = -1 ..............(ii)×1

6x + 3y = 9

x + 3y = -1

------------

5x = 10 ........[ substracted both eqn]

so

x =  \frac{10}{5}  \\ x = 2

and now subs. x in eqn 1

2x + y = 3

2(2) + y = 3 \\ y = 3 - 4 \\ y =  - 1
