  1. Napoleon Bonaparte was a military dictator who crowned himself as the emperor of France in 1804. Napoleon saw his role as a modernizer of Europe.  He introduced many laws such as the protection of private property and a uniform system of weights and measures provided by the decimal system.
  2. During Revolutionary years for their interests, women started their own political clubs and newspapers. They set up about sixty women clubs which emerged in different French cities. The most famous among them was The Society of Revolutionary and Republican Women. They demanded the right to enjoy the same political rights as men, right to vote, to be elected to the Assembly and to hold political office.
  3. The French Revolution had a major impact on Europe and the New World. Historians widely regard the Revolution as one of the most important events in human history. In the short-term, France lost thousands of its countrymen in the form of émigrés, or emigrants who wished to escape political tensions and save their lives. A number of individuals settled in the neighboring countries (chiefly Great Britain, Germany, Austria, and Prussia), however quite a few also went to the United States. The displacement of these Frenchmen led to a spread of French culture, policies regulating immigration, and a safe haven for Royalists and other counterrevolutionaries to outlast the violence of the French Revolution. The long-term impact on France was profound, shaping politics, society, religion and ideas, and polarizing politics for more than a century.
  4. The legacy of the French Revolution for the peoples of the world during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries was as follows — (i) Ideas of equality and democratic spread from France to other European countries and feudalism was abolished. (ii) Colonial people reworked the idea of freedom from bondage info their movements to create sovereign nation states. (iii) It was the first movement to adopt the ideals of liberty, equality and fraternity. (iv) The declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen gave rights such as right to life, freedom of speech, equality before law, etc. (v) Women were given many rights. They could not be forced to marry against their will, divorce was made legal, schooling was made compulsory and they could train for jobs.
  5. The common men of the French society called the Third Estate which included peasants, artisans, landless labor, servants, merchants, court officials, lawyers etc.benefited from the revolution as they gained liberty and equal social-economic status. The society of the nobility and the clergy who had the privilege of power till then, were forced to relinquish their power. The moderates who wanted Constitutional Monarchy were disappointed because ultimately Napoleon came to power.
