Let the number of toys he initially bought be x.
Given that he bought a certain number of toys for 180.
Therefore the cost price of each toy = 180/x ---------- (1)
Given that he kept one for his own use & sold the rest for one rupee each.
Number of toys sold = (x - 1)
Therefore the selling price of each toy sold = 180/x + 1 ----- (2)
Given that he makes a profit of 10.
(x - 1) * (180/x + 1) = 180 + 10
(x - 1) * (180 + x/x) = 190
(x - 1) * (180 + x) = 190x
180x - x^2 - 180 - x = 190x
x^2 - 11x - 180 = 0
x^2 - 20x + 9x - 180 = 0
x(x - 20) + 9(x - 20) = 0
(x - 20)(x + 9) = 0
x = 20 (or) - 9.
Since x cannot be -ve, so x = 20.
Therefore the number of toys he initially bought = 20.
Hope this helps!
