distance =(x2-x1). (y2- y1)

20=(x-1)(20-4)

20=(x-1)(16)

20=16x-16

36=16x

36/16=x

Q) Find the values of x so that the distance between the points A(1,4) and B(x,20) is 20.

------------------

Answer :-

x = 13 or x = -11

------------------

Given :-

Two points

  • A (1, 4)
  • B (x,20)

To Find :-

Value of x

Solution :-

To find distance between 2 points we use the following distance formula :-

d =\sqrt{(x_{2}-x_{1} )^{2} +(y_{2}-y_{1})^2}

Substituting the values :-

d=\sqrt{(x-1 )^{2} +(20-4)^2}=20

squaring on both sides :-

=>(x-1)^2+256=400

=>(x-1)^2=400-256=144

taking square root on both sides :-

\sqrt{(x-1)^2} = \sqrt{144} \\x-1=12\\x=1+12\\x=13

or

\sqrt{(x-1)^2} = \sqrt{144} \\x-1=-12\\x=1-12\\x=-11

------------------

Therefore x = 13 or x = -11
