A meristem is the tissue in most plants containing undifferentiated cells (meristematic cells), found in zones of the plant where growth can take place. Meristematic cells give rise to various organs of a plant and are responsible for growth.

Ground tissue is the name for a number of different kinds of tissue of plants. These kinds are usually classified by looking at the cell walls. :

Parenchyma cells have thin primary walls and usually remain alive after they become mature. Parenchyma forms the "filler" tissue in the soft parts of plants.Collenchyma cells have thin primary walls with some areas of secondary thickening. Collenchyma provides extra structural support, particularly in regions of new growth.Sclerenchyma cells have thick lignified secondary walls and often die when mature. Sclerenchyma provides the main structural support to a plant.

The apical meristem is the region of dividing cells located at the tips of a plant’s shoots and at the ends of the plant’s roots. Some Arctic plants have the apical meristems located in the middle or lower regions of the plant.

The apical meristem's main function is to encourage cell division and maintain the plant’s growth and regeneration process. Depending on the plant type, the apical meristem is made up of numerous layers. No matter how many layers, the outer layer of the apical meristem is called the tunica and the innermost layer is known as the corpus.

In vascular plants, the lateral meristem is one of two meristems in which growth occurs in order to increase stem girth. A meristem is the region of plant tissue found on the tips of roots and shoots. It is where cell division occurs to produce new growth.

A lateral meristem helps the plant grow laterally. As humans grow, they periodically need to replace clothing in order to accommodate the growing body; a lateral meristem does this for a plant. In order for a plant to grow outward a couple of things need to happen. The outer layer needs to be replaced and a plant needs to able to provide nutrients to new tissue.
