See, it is given that x +a is a factor of x²+px+q and x²+mx+n

So, x = - a should satisfy both equations

So, a²-ap+q = 0

a²-am+n=0

q - ap = n - am

n-q = a(m-p) 

So, a = (n-q)/(m-p)
