Light year is the distance a light ray can travel in one year in vacuum.

one light year= speed of light x time one year
= 3x10^8 m/sx 1 year
=3×10^8m/sx(365x24x60x60)
=9.46x10 ^15 m

The distance of a star from Earth is 8.33 light minutes.
This means that light takes 8.33 light minutes to travel from star to earth.
conversion to metre:
Light minutes= 3x10^8x time x minutes
= 3x10^8x (365x 24x60) m
8.33 light minutes= 8.33x 3x 20^8 ×(365×24×60) metre.
