a part of monthly hostel fixed and remaining depend on the no. of days one has taken food in mess.when a student A takes food for 20 days she has to pay 1000 as hostel charges whereas a student B, who takes food for 26 days ,pays 1180 as hostel charges .find the fixed charges and the cost of food per day.​

Let the fixed charge be x and the variable charge be y.

x+20y=1000---(1)

x+26y=1180---(2)

subtract (2) from (1)

x+20y=1000

-x+26y=1180

________________

46y=2180

y=2180/46

you will get y value.

Now substitute y value in (1) or (2).

You will get fixed charge cost per day.

According to the question, For A it is,   x + 20y = 1000 ----------------(1)

and  for B it is,  x + 26y = 1180 ------------(2)

By the elimination method,

 x + 20y = 1000

 x + 26y = 1180

 -6y = -180

 ...  6y = 180

 =>   y = 180/6

 =>   y = 30

And, substituting the value of y in eq. (1), we get,

 =>   x  + 20 * 30 = 1000

 =>   x  = 1000- 600

 =>   x  = 400

Hence, the fixed charge is Rs. 400 and cost of the food per day is Rs. 30
