The white settlers first established in the Appalachian plain from where they traveled to the Mississippi channel, and after the 1860s mopped in the Great Plains beyond the river Mississippi. By 1840 approximately 7 million Americans had emigrated westward in beliefs of acquiring land and being wealthy. The dilemma that settlers were doomed to expand to the west is oftentimes attributed to as Manifest Destiny.
With westward expansion, more nations joined the Union. This led to intense deliberations about the extent of servitude to these new lands. This ultimately became a circumstance which commenced the Civil War.
