Aurora is a luminous phenomenon seen in the night sky in high latitudes, occurring most frequently at Earth’s geomagnetic poles. The display of aurora appears as colored arcs, bands and curtains, usually green or red.
The aurora is formed by the interaction of atoms and molecules in the upper atmosphere with charged particles streaming from the sun, attracted to auroral regions by the Earth’s magnetic field. The aurora is known as aurora borealis in the northern hemisphere and as the aurora australis in Southern hemisphere
The Earth is a giant magnet, with a north magnetic pole and south magnetic pole like the two ends of a bar magnet. And like a bar magnet, the Earth is surrounded by a magnetic field that interacts with electrically charged or magnetized matter, causing effects ranging from deflection of the solar wind to keeping a compass needle pointing north.

Earth's magnetic field is mostly caused by electric currents in the liquid outer core, which is composed of conductive, molten iron. Loops of currents in the constantly moving, liquid iron create magnetic fields. From afar, the Earth looks like a bigmagnet with a north and south pole like any other magnet.
