Answer:

Question:

Obtain the dimensions of a and b in the given equation :

(P+ a/V^2)(v - b) = nRT

where, P is pressure and V is volume.

Note;

Principle of homogeneity;

It states that , in a correct physical expression all the terms must have same dimensions.In other words, only the similar quantities can be added or subtracted.

Solution;

According to the principle of homogeneity, we have;

=> [b] = [volume]

=> [b] = [L^3]

Also;

=> [a/V^2] = [pressure]

=> [a/(L^3)^2] = [M L^(-1) T^(-2)]

=> [a]/[L^6] = [M L^(-1) T^(-2)]

=> [a] = [M L^(-1) T^(-2) L^6]

=> [a] = [M L^5 T^(-2)]
