Seema was a young girl who used to work as a maid at my friend's house. She was a tiny, diminutive young girl with eyes that had a carapace-like shine. One day I had gone to my friend's place but she was out so Seema and I struck up a conversation. She told me that she was eager to go to school but she was unable to do so because of her family responsibilities. At fourteen, Seema was the oldest of five children, her father had passed away when she was nine and her mother was a day labourer. But her mother could not have possibly fed five mouths as well as her own with just a day labourer's job. So, Seema left school and decided to lend a hand to support the family four years back. One cannot proritize food for thought on an empty stomach, said Seema, wise words in the mouth of such a young girl. I knew she used to take books from my friend and read in the ten fifteen minutes she would get for herself between jobs.
