Let the total marks be x.

Highest marks obtained was 4/5th of the total marks. Thus:

Highest \: \: marks \: \: = \frac{4}{5}\times  x

Second highest marks was 16/25th of the total marks. Thus:

2^{nd} \: \: Highest \: \: marks = \frac{16}{25} \times x

Sum of the highest marks and second highest marks was 216. Thus:

\frac{4}{5}x+\frac{16}{25} x=216

Simplify the LHS.

1.44x=216

x=216 \div 1.44

x=150.

SO THE TOTAL MARKS WAS 150.
