Highest marks obtained was 4/5th of the total marks. Thus:

$Highest \: \: marks \: \: = \frac{4}{5}\times x$

Second highest marks was 16/25th of the total marks. Thus:

$2^{nd} \: \: Highest \: \: marks = \frac{16}{25} \times x$

Sum of the highest marks and second highest marks was 216. Thus:

$\frac{4}{5}x+\frac{16}{25} x=216$

Simplify the LHS.

$1.44x=216$

$x=216 \div 1.44$

$x=150$.

SO THE TOTAL MARKS WAS 150.
