Atomic number is considered as more appropriate parameter than atomic mass. Because chemical property of an element is decided by ability of losing or accepting electron of that element.

i) When we move from left to right the metallic character of an element decreases .

This is because the effective nuclear charge on the valence electron increases. Therefore it is very difficult for an element to lose electron and become electropositive.

ii)When we move from top to bottom the mettalic character of an element increases.

This is because the number of shells increases because of which the nuclear force on the valence electron decreases. Therefore it is easy to lose electron
