• This lesson was written by John Holt. This lesson gives us information about the new things that teachers learn while teaching the children. Even though the main work of teachers is to teach they can also learn a lot during this process.
• This lesson is all about the incident when a five-year-old visited her house and she gave him a book called Hop on Pop to read. At first, he was very comfortable reading the story but soon he came across some words that were difficult. The author tried to tell him these words but after a few pages when he came across the same words he could not read them and kept pronouncing the word differently.
• The author through this incident learned that it takes time for children to learn the spelling of new words as they do not remember the spelling as they turn the pages. Also, one child was different from the other, and even though some children were able to learn new words easily, other children could not do the same. Another lesson learned by her was that children had to get familiar with the look of letters in general before they learned to read.
