Distillation is a process that can be used to separate a pure liquid from a mixture of liquids. It works when the liquids have different boiling points. Distillation is commonly used to separate ethanol - the alcohol in alcoholic drinks - from water. The mixture is heated in a flask.

✔ immiscible liquids - liquids which do not dissolve in each other.
✔we can separate a mixture of two immiscible liquids by the process of filtration.
✔two immiscible liquids can be easily separated by putting in a differential
separating funnel.
✔ Application :-
• separating of oil from water.
• extraction of iron from its ore. lighter Slag is removed from over the molten iron.

We can separate a mixture of two immiscible liquids by using the separating technique separating funnel.
Example: Petrol and Water.
Petrol and water are immiscible liquids so they form layers in the separating funnel. Water being heavier, form's the lower layer whereas petrol being lighter forms the upper layer. On opening the nob of the separating funnel, the lower layer of water comes out first and collected in a beaker. When the water layer has completely run off, then the nob is closed. The petrol is left behind in the separating funnel. It can be collected in a separate beaker by opening the nob again.
