Answer the following questions.
1. The speaker seems to show two contrasting sides to the nightingale's
character in the course of the poem. Which are these?
2. Although the glow-worm is much tinier than the nightingale,
he still talks about himself as being equal to the bird. Which four
lines in the poem show this?
3. Do you think the glow-worm makes use of flattery to save his life?
Quote the line which shows this.
4. When the glow-worm speaks of the “power Divine”, do you think
he is truly glorifying God or is simply being very clever? Justify
your answer.
5. Do you think the glow-worm could really spoil the nightingale's
song? If yes, how? If no, why does he say so?
6. Read the poem once again and write down the rhyme scheme used

  1. 1. The two contrasting side of the nightingale,s character shown in the course of the poem are :- 1) it shows how beautifully the nightingale sings and cheers the villagers. 2) on he other side, he is very innocent , nive and gullible as he believed the glow worm's words.
  2. 2. the lines that show that glow worm through being tinier that the Nightingale, was equal to the bird are:
  • For 'twas the self-same power Devine.
  • Thought you to sing, and me to shine.
  • That you with music, I will light
  • Might beautify and cheer the night.'
  • In these lines, the glow-worm is telling the Nightingale that is should not eat it as it had been created by the same God who had created it.
