Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay was born on 26 June 1838 in Bengali Brahmin family in a small village of Bengal. He was a great writer, poet and journalist who became an inspiration for authors across India. In 1858 he became one of the first two students to earn a Graduate degree from newly founded Calcutta University. One can learn many things from Bankim Chandra life especially new writers and authors.
Bankim Chandra was the first Indian writer who uses the Western form of the novel successfully in an Indian language (Bengali). He wrote 14 novels in Bengali from 1865 to 1884. In Calcutta (Bengal) people used to read novels written by English novelists but Bankim Chandra’s novels were the first that gave them a satisfying resemblance of their own world in fictional form. His first three novels were purely based on romantic stories but he also wrote many fictions too. In his social novels he made the characters that broke the traditions but at the same time he was careful that at last conventional prove more powerful over the unconventional. In his two best social novels, Vishavriksha and Krishnakanter Will, he raised the questions about extramarital love and remarriage of widows, but at the end by method of suicide and homicide he makes room for traditions to win out. Bankim Chandra most famous novel was Anand Math published in 1882 contained the song “Bande Mataram”, which was later adopted as National Song.
His humorous sketches are his best known works other than his novels. His book Kamalakanter Daptar contains half humorous and half serious sketches. Critics, like Pramathnath Bishi, consider Chattopadhyay as the best novelist in Bangla literature.
