Answer:

1.The bitter cold climate brought the six men together by chance. They were huddled by the side of a fire that was on the verge of dying out any moment with a stick in each man's hand.

2.Each of them possessed a stick. there is a symbolic significance of the logs of wood after reading the whole poem we realise that the stick in each hand is a symbol of since these person could have helped one another and save themselves from Death.

3.The need of the hour was to keep the dying fire alive by feeding it with more logs or else the cold would freeze them all to death. However due to their racist nature, none gave their logs thus they died due to the cold within and not due to the cold weather outside .
