The main feature of modern poetry is freedom. Modern and Post-modern poets exercise the freedom to write in any structure they choose—rhymed verse, blank verse, free verse—and they have the freedom to experiment with new hybrid structures. their poetry is often characterized by intensely personal imagery and allusions that can be inaccessible to the majority of readers. Modern poetry is by-and-large free of the requirement that it make sense or have meaning. It may have a feeling, an experience, a provocative shadow of an idea or embryonic idea in place of a well-formed meaning. Though some poets create meaning for their readers, meaning is widely left in the minds of the reader, who must bring self to the poem. Much is accepted as poetry in the modern and post-modern eras.
