Question: points x, y ,z are collinear such that d(x,y )=17 , d(y,z)=8 , find d(x,z).

Solution:-

Possiblity 1

X-Y-Z

d(X,Z)= d(X,Y)+d(Y,Z)

d(X,Z)=17+8

Therefore, d(X,Z)= 25 units

Possiblity 2

Y-X-Z

d(Y,Z)=d(Y,X)+d(X,Z)

8=17+d(X,Z)

8-17= d (X,Z)

d(X,Z)= -9

As , distance never comes in negative

Therefore , d(X,Z) = -9 units is not possible

Possiblity 3

Y-Z-X

d(Y,X)=d(Y,Z)+d(Z,X)

17=8+d(X,Z)

17-8=d(X,Z)

9=d(X,Z)

Therefore , d(X,Z)=9 units.
