columnar epithelium consists of a single layer of tall and slender cells, lying on basement membrane. Nuclei lie near the bases of the cells. Some cells of epithelium produce mucus and are called goblet cells which protects the wall of gut from the enzyme action.

location- it is found in the lining of stomach and intestine.

function- absorption and secretion

columnar epithelium can also be ciliated. It occurs in the inner surface of hollow organs like fallopian tubes. In respiratory tract, mucus traps the dust particles, with the movement of cilia in a specific direction and the dust particles are removed out.
location- It is present in lower part of trachea, bronchi and larger bronchioles

Squamous epithelium is made up of thin, flat, polygonal cells.

They are having disc like structure.

The nucleus is rounded, bulging and centrally located.

They form a structure as that of a floor tile .

The squamous epithelium are of two types :

★ Simple Squamous tissue
★ Stratified Squamous tissue

Location :

They form the lining of nose, pericardial cavity, blood vessels, lung alveoli, coelomic cavity etc .

They are also found in the surface of the skin .

Functions :

• Protection

• Exchange of gases

• Ultrafiltration

• Abrasion
