Appreciation About 2.2 The Sower

  • TITLE:- "The Sower" is a poem about the hard work and endurance of a sower, who struggles tirelessly and relentlessly while the poet discerns his actions and phrases him as an august mood, who works not for himself, but for others. The title of the poem depicts the central character of the poem, that is, the Sower.

  • POET:- "The Sower" written by Victor-Marie Hugo is a short lyrical poem. It was initially written in French by Hugo and interpreted to English by Toru Dutt.

  • THEME:- The theme used in the poem are imagery and symbolism. The poem is full of explanatory imagery, as each line either interprets the scene or the duty of the sower or the poet. The authority of the silhouette of the sower over the deep creases is symbolic of the authority of man over nature.
  • CENTRAL IDEA:- The central idea of the poem revolves around the deed of sowing seeds by the sower, while the poet discerns him and begins to honour him for his noble actions.

  • RHYME SCHEME:- The language used by the poet is a little complex because it has been composed in a manner that maintains the rhyme scheme of 'abab'.

  • FIGURE OF SPEECH:- The poetic devices which are used in the poem are Alliteration, Antithesis, Consonance, Hyperbole, Inversion, Personification, Repetition, and Synecdoche.

  • SPECIAL FEATURE: The sower's responsibility towards his work and the poet's fondness for the sower, give the poem a positive and encouraging tone, hence making it a fine read.
