Globally speaking, if more countries maintained a democratic government then fewer conflicts may happen. Democracy lessens the likelihood of rash decisions because of the checks and balances used in making decisions. All citizens help to make decisions in the broadest sense but even at the top, no one person has all the control.

Additionally, democracy helps to insure everyone's freedom. Citizens have freedom of speech and religion for example. Democracy helps to insure that the government and its decisions represent the people because of the system of voting that elects officials. Additionally, these votes and decisions are made public so that all citizens know how and why laws and policies are made. Human rights are more likely to be respected and promoted within a democratic society as well. Because of the freedoms that democratic governments insure, citizens feel free to speak up for the rights of others and in so doing, they help insure that human rights
