Maharashtra is a state in the western peninsular region of India occupying a substantial portion of the Deccan Plateau. As per a report in 2021, it was the second most visited Indian state by foreigners and fifth most visited state by domestic tourists in the country.

1. Aurangabad - Aurangabad is the tourism capital of Maharashtra. This city is situated in the central part of Maharashtra and attracts tourists to its natural beauty. The Ajanta Caves and Ellora Caves, which lie on the outskirts of Aurangabad are internationally renowned for man-made caves and intricate carvings in them from the pre historic period. Ajanta and Ellora Caves are also UNESCO World Heritage sites.

2. Mumbai - The economic capital of India, Mumbai is a major tourist spot in Maharashtra. It houses architectural wonders like Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus built by the British more than 200 years ago. It also has archeological attractions such as Elephanta caves and major pilgrimage sites such as the Siddhi Vinayak temple and Haji Ali Darjah.

3. Lonavala and Khandala - On Main Mumbai - Pune railway line lies the British developed many hill stations of lonavala and Khandala.
