At the centre, we have BJP, a right-wing political part with a Narendra Modi as Prime Minister. PM Modi is popular, popular to an extent where is not a politician, he’s a star. He doesn’t have followers, he has fans. The BJP’s/NDA’s win in 2014 was historic, the oldest political part the INC had been defeated by a huge margin. The BJP’s win in 2019 is literally cast in stone already. The BJP rules about 60% of of all states in India.

The Indian National Congress, crippled by corruption allegation and incumbency factors tasted defeat in 2014. They have failed to recover massively in the successive elections. They are losing, and losing quite badly. The head of the party is Sonia Gandhi, followed by Rahul Gandhi. The party is not giving importance to capable people in the party and continues to cling on to nepotism. Reviving the Congress is a tough, tough job.

The Left in India is fragmented, there are six major Left parties out of CPI(M) is the most popular. The others are not what you call mainstream political parties. They have a few strongholds such as in Kerala and Tripura, where they are in power. But they suffered a crushing defeat in West Bengal, a state that they ruled for decades together. The Left is nowadays seen as something anti-national, due to their stand on various issues such as the army and the JNU issue. A common thought among people is that the Left is getting extremely reactive and are not concentrating on increasing their base. They are getting highly unpopular.

Then comes the regional political parties. Currently, Trinamool Congress is, in my opinion, the most powerful. It won the West Bengal election for the second straight time last year and is right now a major player in the Mahagathbandhan (more on that later).
