More than 300,000 farmers head to Capital for 'decisive battle' with Government
Hundreds of thousands of Indian farmers have marched upon Delhi and set up vast camps blocking
entry to the city in protest at agriculture laws. They say it will destroy livelihoods.
More than 300,000 farmers marched from the states of Punjab and Haryana - on foot and in
convoys of tractors - at the weekend to reach the Indian capital for what they described as a
"decisive battle with the central government.
The farmers are protesting against a series of agricultural laws. The farmers say that the
deregulation of crop pricing will leave them at the mercy of big corporations. The government has
argued that the laws are necessary reforms that give farmers more autonomy over the selling of
their crops and will break big unfair monopolies.
Agriculture is one of the biggest employment sector in India, where more than 40% of the
population is working.
The farmers' demands have proved contentious. The farmer's proposals as follows
1. The first and foremost suggestion is for a uniform system and registration system.
2. Give guarantee of minimum support price (MSP).
3. Setting up of an Agriculture Court.
4. Create a portal at the central level wherein details of food items produced by trader and kept
godowns and extracted from the godowns are updated on day to day basis.
They also demanded to remove the fine for stubble burning, the practice of setting fields alight
to remove the old crop. According to the farmers it is unavoidable. On the other hand the
government says stubble burning is a major contributor to the toxic air pollution that engulfs
Delhi and northern India in the winter months,
