Political Structure :

● Kings were hereditary but somewhere it is found that the Kings were elected too. The kings were elected by the people.

● King was headof the state and above law but was dependent on his ministers refered to as Ratnins.

● With increase in royal power the sabha and samiti lost their powers.

● Criminals were given more severe punishments and Capital punishment was also practiced.

Social Life :

● Aryans wore simple clothes whereas the rich had colored and embroidered clothes.

● Both men and women enjoyed various recreational activities.

● Caste system was not organized during the Rig-vedic period.

● There were no or very late superstitions during the Rig-vedic period which increased in the vedic period.

Administrative Structure :

● Families were patriarchal and father was the head of Aryan Family. Families were formed into grama.

● The tribe was lead by the Rajan, and the Rajan was not autocrat. He worked according to the will of Sabha and Samithi.

● Senani and Purohit officers helped King in administration.

The polity of the Early Vedic period was basically a tribal polity with the tribal chief in the centre. The tribe was called Jana and the tribal chief was called Rajana. Rajana looked after the affairs of the tribe with the help of other tribal members and two tribal assemblies i.e. Sabha and Samiti.
