Caste identity can play a role in politics:

1. Elections - Parties choose candidates keeping in mind the caste composition of the electorate. They nominate candidates from different castes so that they can get their support to win the elections.

2. Campaigning - Political parties and candidates appeal to the people to give them their votes on the basis of caste. Few political parties are known to favour certain castes and are regarded as their representatives.

3. Forming the government - Political parties show a biased approach in including representatives of different castes in the government.

4. Universal adult franchise and the principle of one person one vote can be misused by the politicians to secure caste based votes.

5. Caste based politics can disrupt social harmony.

In this way politics based on caste identity alone is not very healthy in democracy.
