Pollen-Pistil Interaction: Pollen grains are deposited on the stigma either due to closeness of the anthers to the stigma or by pollinating agents (biotic or abiotic). This unique feature brings about pollen-pistil interaction between the male gametophyte, the pollen grains, with the massive sporophytic tissue.

Answer for Class 12 Biology Students

Pollen- Pistil Interaction:

 Events from pollen deposition on stigma until pollen tube enters the ovule are together referred to as pollen- pistil interaction.

 Pistil rejects pollen of the wrong type either from other species or from the same plant (self-incompatibility).

 The ability of pistil to recognize the pollen followed by its acceptance or rejection is the result of chemical interactions between pollen grains and pistil.

 Following compatible pollination, pollen grain germinates on stigma to produce pollen tube which comes out through one of the germ pore.

 Pollen tube grows through tissue of stigma and style and reaches the ovary.

 If pollen grain is shed at 2-celled stage (a vegetative cell and a generative cell), generative cell divides to form two male gametes during the growth of pollen tube through style.

 In plants which shed pollen in 3- celled stage, pollen tube carries 2 male gametes from the beginning.

 Pollen tube after reaching ovary enters ovule through micropyle.

 It enters one of the synergids through filiform apparatus.

 Filiform apparatus guides the entry of pollen tube.

 Once one pollen tube reaches the synergid, degeneration of the synergid removes the attractive signal and other germinating pollen tubes cease development, so that only one pollen grain achieves fertilization.

Note: Knowledge of pollen pistil interaction helps plant breeders in manipulation pollen pistil interaction even in incompatible pollination to get desired hybrid.
