2. A pollutant may cause long- or short-term damage by changing the growth rate of plant or animal species, or by interfering with human amenities, comfort, health, or property values.

3. Depending upon the form in which they persist after being released into the environment, the pollutants are categorized into two types, namely

a) Pri­mary and,

b) Secondary pollutants.

4. These are those which are emitted directly from the source and persist in the form in which they were added to the environ­ment.
