I has declined due to following reasons:-
(1) It displaces local and tribal people leaving them in that area which leads to revolt against those projects.

(2) it harms biodiversity and ecosystem. It also submerge a large no. of trees and create a barrier for aquatic animals to migrate.

(3) Initial cost is very high and requires much labour.

(4) It leads to water scarcity in the areas followed by the project as they don't get enough water.
