Pollution in Ladakh.
Water scarcity, lack of adequate green cover and air pollution are the three biggest challenges for all of us in Ladakh. SHF has joined hands with Padamshree awardee, Chewang Norphel, who is also hailed as Iceman of India, to create artificial glaciers to channelise the glacier water here. The excess water of glaciers, which otherwise go waste, can be stored in reservoirs and utilized for the public use through proper distribution network of pipes. The green cover in Ladakh too can be increased by using these water resources. Our former kings in Ladakh discouraged people for plantation as they feared that water would be wasted for them. It resulted in most of the Ladakh becoming dry and dessert like.Question What is your take on air pollution?Answer: As the unregulated tourism is on rise in Ladakh, the number of vehicles are also increasing in accordance which is causing air pollution. The state government should sponsor a study on the impact of air pollution in the region as well as another on carrying capacity of the state for tourism so that right policies can be framed and, robust action plan is implemented to protect the fragile environment of the area. Water and air are the basic sources of life and we can not take them for granted. As the charity begins from home, so SHF is heading towards adapting solar energy for its 250 acre campus of MIMC in Leh to cut down on air pollution in its surroundings . We are vigorously engaged in our campaign to spread mass awareness on clean air and water conservation.
