Ganga and Yamuna are sacred rivers of the Hindus. These rivers get polluted due to people throwing the ashes of their dear departed. These rivers also get polluted as people bathe themselves and their cattle in their water. The amount of pollution can be calculated by the presence of a bacteria named coliform.

Experts estimate that more than 3000 million litres of untreated sewage from these towns along the Ganges are pumped into the riverevery day. By the time it reaches Varanasi, whose untreated sewage (or most of it) is also pumped into the waters, it becomes a sewer and the sixth most polluted river in the world.
Lack of sufficient number of sewage treatment plants has led to the increase in the polluted stretch of the Yamuna. ... Whereas the most polluted stretch of theYamuna has 14 – 28 mg/ l BOD concentration. BOD is increasing because there are numerous untreated sewage drains which dump drains to the river.
